William E. Carlson elected Chair of MSBA’s Section of Business Law

Shapiro Sher President and business department head, William E. Carlson, is elected Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association Section of Business Law for a one-year term ending in 2013.

Mr. Carlson served as vice chair of the MSBA Section of Business Law from 2011-2012, and he served as secretary from 2010-2011.

MD Daily Record names Matthew Esworthy a 2012 “VIP”

The Maryland Daily Record names Shapiro Sher litigation-group partner Matthew A.S. Esworthy to its 2012 list of 40 Maryland VIPs, or “Very Important Professionals,” who have achieved success by age 40.

In naming its 2012 award winners, the Daily Record writes that recipients were selected because, in addition to excelling in their careers, they each are “contributing a new energy to Maryland through mentoring, leadership and giving back to the community.”

“JP Morgan, Citigroup Lose Bid to Move $2 Billion TMST Suit”

Bloomberg, Dow Jones, Law360 and other media report on a significant development in the Thornburg Mortgage bankruptcy case; Shapiro Sher partner Joel I. Sher serves as Chapter 11 Trustee for Thornburg, now known as TMST.

The development involves the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland denying JP Morgan, Citigroup and other financial institutions’ attempt to withdraw the litigation from bankruptcy court.

In 2011, in five separate complaints filed in Maryland’s bankruptcy court, Sher sued, among others, Goldman Sachs, Barclays Capital; Bank of America; Countrywide Home Loans; Royal Bank of Canada and a group of banks made up of JP Morgan Chase, Citi Group, Credit Suisse, Royal Bank of Scotland, and UBS. The suit against the latter group of banks alone sought approximately $2.2 billion in damages arising from a series of alleged collusive and predatory actions that eventually forced Thornburg into bankruptcy.

“E-Discovery in Criminal Cases”

The Criminal Justice Section of the American Bar Association has published The State of Criminal Justice 2012, a new book including chapters on cybercrime and on e-discovery; both chapters are co-authored by Shapiro Sher partner Matthew A.S. Esworthy, co-chair of the Section’s Cyber Crime Committee.
