“Thornburg Trustee Settles Suit Against Ex-Insiders for $6.5M”

The AmLaw Daily, Dow Jones, The American Banker, National Mortgage News, and other media outlets report that Shapiro Sher partner Joel I. Sher, in his role as U.S. Trustee for Thornburg Mortgage, has agreed to settle the lawsuit he filed against the company’s former executives and outside counsel, alleged to have engaged in a consipiracy to secretly use the failed mortgage company’s employees and assets to launch a new company.

Shapiro Sher’s Lee Riley testifies about changes to Maryland’s UCC

K. Lee Riley, Jr., as Chair of the Uniform Commercial Code Subcommittee of the Business Law Section of the MD State Bar Association, testifies before the Maryland House of Delegates regarding amendments to Articles 1 and 9 of the Maryland Uniform Commercial Code.

Mr. Riley testified in support of House Bills 700 and 713, which would update the Maryland Uniform Commericial Code to make it consistent with the most recent versions of the federal UCC, as developed by the Uniform Law Commission in conjunction with the American Law Institute.

Shapiro Sher partner Paul Mark Sandler is quoted in The Maryland Daily Record regarding his opinion about whether the Court of Special Appeals should vacate its own decision in a case involving a $150 million damage award against Exxon Mobil.

Plaintiffs’ lawyers in the Exxon Mobil case filed a motion for reconsideration, asserting that the appellate panel had failed to reach a seven-judge majority on several issues as required by state law for cases heard by the entire court.
