Attorney Profile
Jim Trope has practiced law in the insurance industry for over thirty years. As of counsel in Shapiro Sher’s Insurance Law Group, he represents insurance companies, insurance professionals, and policyholders in litigation, transactions, employment matters, and regulatory disputes. In doing so, he draws on his decades of experience as in-house counsel for insurers, including Erie Insurance Group, where he managed company expansion efforts, regulatory compliance, and litigation across numerous states, in addition to managing matters with the U.S. Treasury Department and the U.S. Department of Labor.
Thanks to his extensive in-house experience, Jim appreciates the needs of corporate legal departments in the insurance industry. He is prepared to assist with all aspects of insurance law, including insurance coverage disputes, market conduct examinations, corporate operations, employment issues, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures. He also has experience in captive insurance operations, risk retention groups, and employer self-insurance funds for workers compensation.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jim served as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, for which he flew 560 combat missions as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He also served as a Major in the Army National Guard for over twenty years, during which time he commanded an aviation unit consisting of fifty-two pilots and twenty-five aircraft. He was twice awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal for commanding emergency disaster operations, including for Hurricane Andrew.
